Optics and fluorescence microscopy facilities

  • In addition to the Multiphoton Imaging Suite, the Biomedical Physics Group has an optics facility embracing conventional microscopies, near infrared and Raman microspectrometry as well as research techniques such as optical coherence tomography, with Doppler- and polarisation-sensitive detection systems, and dual photon spectroscopy.
  • We have a range of techniques for characterising the structure and biophysical properties of cells and tissues, including thermomechanical testing rigs that complement the facilities elsewhere in the University.
  • Our membrane research employs the techniques of micropipette aspiration and fluctuation spectroscopy, which can be performed on cell and vesicle preparations.
  • For monolayer studies we have a range of computer-controlled Langmuir troughs, equipped for fluorescence microscopy.
  • We also work closely with the university’s Biocatalysis Centre and have access to the facilities there.
