Sept 2022 CONTRAST Coherent Raman Workshop:
This Coherent Raman Scattering (CRS) workshop in Exeter is focused on Biological and Biomedical applications of CRS microscopy. The overarching goal of the workshop is to bring together researchers from multiple disciplines to facilitate exchange of knowledge between CONTRAST facility users, CRS instrument developers, and those wishing to learn more about the capabilities of CRS.
Coherent Raman Scattering microscopy is an emerging technique that exploits nonlinear optics to enhance weak molecular vibrational signals and enables real-time imaging of tissues with chemical contrast on the cellular scale. This workshop aims to foster a community of researchers to share recent insights into CRS microscopy, to promote knowledge sharing and to develop new collaborations.
The main focus of the workshop will be on biomedical and life science applications such as cancer diagnostics, the development of next generation therapeutics, and cell and tissue imaging. However, topics such as biomedical, food, and materials science will also be covered and are very welcome.

Registration
Attendance to the workshop is free however spaces may be limited so please register as soon as possible to reserve your space.
If you would like to present either a poster or an oral presentation, please upload an abstract when you register. Abstracts should be no longer than 300 words, excluding title authors and references and should be in the form of a word document. Oral presentation slots will be 15 minutes (12minutes talk followed by 3minutes questions).
There will be a prize for the best student poster.
We welcome presentations based on Coherent Raman results and also presentations outlining a biological problem, which the authors are seeking a solution, and where potentially Coherent Raman and vibrational spectroscopy may be used in the future.

By Car

By Rail
Exeter has two railway stations - Exeter St David's (main station) and Central. Exeter St David's Station is approximately 10 minutes walk from the Streatham Campus and taxis are available. The average journey time from London Paddington is 2 hours 30 minutes to Exeter. See Streatham Campus map for the walking route.

By Air
Exeter Airport (EXT)
Direct flights operate into Exeter from Paris, Dublin, Amsterdam, Geneva and airports in the United Kingdom including Aberdeen, Belfast, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Guernsey, Jersey, Leeds/Bradford, Manchester, Newcastle, Norwich and St Marys.

Bristol Airport (BRS)
Bristol airport is a convenient alternative airport and often offers a greater number of flights to most European destinations.
Most budget airlines operate from this airport and there are good connections to Exeter.
Connections from Bristol Airport to Exeter:
Shuttle Bus: Airport Flyer Express link to Bristol Temple Meads train station (departs every 10 mins, duration 20 mins).
Train: Bristol Temple meads to Exeter (departs approx. every 30 mins, 1 hour duration).

Traveling to Exeter from London Heathrow
From Heathrow terminals follow signs to the "Heathrow Express". This is a fast rail link between Heathrow airport to London Paddington (a main line train station in London) it only stops at other Heathrow terminals and takes 22 mins to get from Heathrow (Terminal 5) to Paddington. There are several other public transport routes signposted from Heathrow (buses, subway and other train stations) if you are unsure ask the airport staff to direct you to the "Heathrow Express to Paddington".
Once you are at Paddington you should catch the direct train to Exeter. Trains (as in most countries) will be posted on the departure board by the name of their final destination station, which in this case will be "Penzance". There are other routes to Exeter but you don't want to use them, they are slow and stop at lots of small towns.
The platform number for the Penzance train will not be announced on the departure board until 10-15 mins before it is due to depart. If you're cutting it fine and you have a smart phone you can check the departure board online and head straight to the right platform.
You can buy tickets at the airport, or if you're short of time you can buy them on the train. You should be able to get on the Heathrow Express and buy a ticket all the way to Exeter. Alternatively, you can buy tickets in advance online using the national rail website.
Accommodation
There are a range of hotels around Exeter which are either a short walk or taxi ride from the university campus.
