About us

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is a vibrant community of staff and students, based on the leafy Streatham campus of the University of Exeter in the beautiful South West of England. Our research encompasses a broad range of experimental, computational, and theoretical physics, with research groups in electromagnetic and acoustic materials, quantum systems and nanomaterials, biomedical physics, and astrophysics.

The Department is next door to the Living Systems Institute, which houses an interdisciplinary team of scientists working on understanding and controlling the individual and collective properties of cells.

The roles

We are seeking to hire:

  • A Professor in the biophysics of multicellular systems
  • A Professor and a Lecturer in biomedical physics aligned with our Nanotheranostics research
  • A Senior Lecturer and a Lecturer in the broad area of Metamaterials

Professor in the biophysics of multicellular systems

We are seeking to appoint a Professor with a particular interest in the biophysics of multicellular systems and a programme of cutting edge experimental research with strong theoretical underpinning. Based in the Living Systems Institute (LSI), in addition to conducting research at the international forefront, the post will include responsibility for strengthening biophysics collaborations between LSI and the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and with external partners. We are looking for a leading international figure with the ability to attract world-class academics to their research group. Applicants will be innovative researchers with a strong track record of research funding and international quality publications.

Professor in Biomedical Physics

We are seeking to appoint a Professor with a particular interest in the areas of NanoBiophotonics or NanoBioengineering developing novel techniques in the fields of Biomedical Nanomachines, Nanosensing or Nanotherapeutics. The successful candidate will lead and co-ordinate research activity in one or more of the following: Biomedical Nanophotonics / NanoEngineering / Nanomachines / Nanosensing / Nanotherapeutics. They will also participate in the leadership, development, and delivery of high-quality, research-led, taught programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

We would expect the appointed candidate to lead research in complementary areas to our EPSRC funded Raman Nanotheranostics Programme (EP/R020965/1) and advanced imaging CONTRAST facility (EP/S009957/1); helping to grow our critical mass and leadership in developing and applying novel Biophotonic and NanoBiophotonic techniques to biology and medicine.

Lecturer in Biomedical Physics

The new lecturer will contribute to extending the research profile of Biomedical Physics at Exeter, particularly in areas related or complementary to Translational Biophotonics, Biospectroscopy or NanoBiophotonics. They will be expected to fulfil the research, teaching, and administration duties as a lecturer, and to extend the research profile of Biomedical Physics and related areas, attracting and supervising postdoctoral researchers and postgraduate research students.

Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in Metamaterials

We are seeking to appoint two new staff (a lecturer and a senior lecturer) to support and strengthen our research activities and future strategy as part of the Centre of Metamaterials Research and Innovation (CMRI). The CMRI takes a leading role in the UK’s metamaterials and community and a strong track record of collaboration and funding from industry and governmental sponsors.

The CMRI’s existing specialities span theory to experiment, design and fabrication, with strengths in acoustics, phononics, fluidics, quantum, RF/microwave, visible, infra-red and terahertz, and includes biomaterials, magnetic materials, phase change materials, nanocomposites, 2D materials and metamaterial manufacturing. Applications are encouraged from candidates with research expertise in any area related to metamaterials including (but not limited to) the domains of electromagnetism, acoustics, thermal, mechanical/elastic etc and relevant to technologies ranging from imaging and displays, security, defence, communication, energy, displays, health, build environment, transport etc.
