Ben Holdstock is a PhD student who has been working extensively with polymer foam-based metamaterials and actuators. Currently, he is developing a sensory surface formed from a metamaterial skin. This work builds upon research undertaken during his master's project, which involved the mathematical modelling and characterisation of shape-morphing polymer foam bi-layer actuators, designed to respond to changes in ambient pressure. The results of these experiments were then used to create electromagnetic devices, integrating components such as antennae and photovoltaic cells to produce sensors and expandable structures.
