Physics and Astronomy
I am a Lecturer in Biomedical Physics with a focus on translational biophotonics. My passion lies in using interdisciplinary science to solve societal challenges, and my group’s research sits firmly at the intersection of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. I am dedicated to developing novel spectroscopic tools and analytical methods to tackle real-world problems—from transforming clinical diagnostics to ensuring environmental safety.
My approach combines physical experimentation with computational techniques i.e. machine learning, Monte Carlo modelling, and computational chemistry.
My current research and recent projects focus on several key areas of impact:
- Advancing Ethical Research & Quantitative Imaging: Supported by a Royal Society Research Grant, I am developing a time-domain diffuse optical spectroscopy (TDDOS) device to precisely measure light propagation, alongside creating sophisticated, animal-free 3D tissue phantoms.
- Environmental & Agricultural Sensing: Applying biophotonics to ecological challenges, my recent work includes engineering advanced nanoparticle sensors designed to detect and monitor pesticides harmful to bee populations.
- Clinical Translation of Deep Raman Spectroscopy: I have a long-standing focus on translating Deep Raman techniques (SORS and TRS) into the real world. My previous work pioneered non-invasive, chemically specific temperature sensing through barriers. I have also driven the clinical translation of TRS to support mammography, successfully trialling a prototype at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital to assess breast cancer calcifications and improve clinical decision-making.
