I started my PhD in October 2019 after graduating with a MPhys with Honours in Physics in July that same year. During my Masters project I worked with Dr. Steven Hepplestone using Density Functional Theory (DFT) to investigate the effect of Hydrogen and Oxygen adsorption on monolayer, bilayer and heterobilayers of PtS2 and WTe2 transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), for the purposes of water splitting.
My PhD project is titled 'Hybrid 2D Heterostructures For Energy Storage' and is supervised by Dr. Steven Hepplestone and Prof. Saverio Russo. The project involves investigating layered materials, such as Graphite, TMDCs and transition metal oxides, for use as Lithium ion battery electrodes. During this time, I have also extended the work of my Masters project by investigating the TMDCs MoS2 and PdSe2 in more depth as a potential water splitting device by studying how the surfaces of these materials affect the energetics of the sub reactions involved in the water splitting process.
