Dr Francis H. Davies
Francis Davies is a materials scientist and theoretical physicist who uses computational modelling, analytical theory, and scientific software to understand how materials behave from the atomic scale upwards. His work spans materials prediction, interface physics, electronic structure, thermal transport, and low-dimensional materials.
He is particularly interested in using quantitative simulation and rigorous physical theory to explain material behaviour, predict new systems, and connect fundamental insight with practical materials design.

 

Francis has developed and maintains scientific software with Fortran codebases, including RAFFEL, ARTEMIS and HEATFLOW which can be found on git hub (see https://github.com/ExeQuantCode)

 

Research Background
Frank completed his PhD in Physics at the University of Exeter, supervised by Dr Hepplestone. His thesis, Methods and Trends in 2D van der Waals Heterostructures, explored computational approaches to modelling and understanding layered materials and their interfaces.
He then held a postdoctoral position at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf in Germany before returning to the University of Exeter for further postdoctoral research as part of a large colabrative grant with Southmapton and Cardiff. 
Frank has worked alongside and collaborated with researchers including Steven Hepplestone, Saverio Russo, Arkady Krasheninnikov, and Gyaneshwar Srivastava.
