Katie Lewis
Postgraduate Researcher
Physics and Astronomy
I joined the Centre for Doctoral training in Metamaterials in September 2018 after receiving my MPhys from the University of Exeter. My master’s research project, the frequency dependence of the intervertebral disc, specialised in the physics which governs the static and dynamic response of the disc within the spine when under various loading conditions.
My PhD project titled ‘Advanced magnetic metamaterials for radio, microwave and millimetre wave applications’ is partially funded by DSTL and aims to produce new metamaterial structures for the control of microwaves. My current work focuses on investigating the structural parameters required for nanometre size magnetic shells to form vortex states.
I am a member of the EUOPS society and on the committee organising the 2019 IONS Exeter conference at the University of Exeter.

Additionally I am a CEMPS Early Careers Research Network (ECRN) manager. Recently I was part of the team involved in organising our annual conference. This included being on the judging panel awarding over £1000 in prizes towards research travel and/or equipment for the best PhD/ Post-Doc talk as well as a poster session.
