Physics and Astronomy

Fellowship opportunities

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Exeter is renowned for its vibrant, high‑impact research culture, uniting world‑leading experts in astrophysics, quantum systems, 2D materials, photonics, and biophysics, with cross-domain excellence in metamaterials and imaging. Its researchers consistently push the boundaries of fundamental science while driving innovative, real‑world applications—from pioneering exoplanet discoveries to breakthroughs in next‑generation materials, optical technologies, and the physics of living systems, linking to technology sectors that include healthcare technologies, ICT, energy, defence and security. We have an extensive network of industry and government collaborators and sponsors, including Dstl, Henry Royce Institute, NPL, QinetiQ, PepsiCo and Syngenta

Applying to my fellowship with Exeter as my host was a very smooth process. They provided great assistance with setting up my fellowship budget, offered very constructive feedback on my research proposal, and, when it was time to prepare for an interview, organised mock interviews and a few coaching sessions, which helped me a lot.

I am a Chilean astronomer doing research on exoplanetary science. Since 2023, I have worked at the University of Exeter, supported with a University Research Fellowship by the Royal Society.
My research aims to understand how planetary systems form and evolve, with a particular focus on their outer regions that host a wide variety of objects from gas giant planets down to smaller icy bodies similar to comets, clustered in debris discs analogous to the Kuiper belt. These outer regions hold the key to understanding fundamental processes of planet formation, their dynamical evolution, and habitability. To that end, I use a variety of observations (e.g. with ALMA and JWST) and simulations (e.g. dust evolution, hydrodynamical and N-body).

Associate Professor, Department of Physics & Astronomy

With state‑of‑the‑art facilities, exceptional mentoring, and a strong track record of nurturing early‑career researchers, the department provides an outstanding environment for scholarship and innovation, making it an ideal place to undertake a fellowship and launch the next stage of a research career; many former fellows have gone on to become permanent members of academic staff within the Department.

Fellowship support is offered at all stages:

  • Advice on scheme suitability and proposal writing from our many successful fellows and research support staff, many of whom have worked for funding bodies and who have expertise in bid development across a range of key funders.
  • Review and feedback on all aspects of draft proposals.
  • Assistance with interview preparation, including the convening of mock panels and communications training where appropriate.
  • 1:1 mentoring from senior colleagues.
  • Peer support from our Early Career Researcher network.
  • Opportunities (but no obligation) to gain teaching experience and to supervise BSc, MSc, MRes, and PhD project students.
  • Training and personal development.
  • Support for grant proposal development from senior academic colleagues and funder specialists within our Research professional services team.
  • Clear criteria for progression to permanent positions.
  • Opportunities for proleptic appointments.
  • Get in Touch

    • Our Directors of Research and Impact, and Business Engagement & Innovation respectively, and are happy to be contacted (via physicsandastronomy@exeter.ac.uk).
    • In a one-to-one conversation we can advise regarding admin support, office and lab space, access to startup funds etc to support you.
    • Potential fellowship applicants are also encouraged to contact individual members of academic staff relevant to their research area.
